INTRODUCTION This document contains release notes for ATENA version 4.2.7 All bugs and problems should be reported by e-mail to cervenka@cervenka.cz. 2. INSTALLATION First make sure that your ATENA hardlock is connected to your computer. It is recommended to uninstall any previous versions of ATENA software from your computer. In some cases it may be necessary to manually remove the directory "c:\Program Files\CervenkaConsulting". Execute the program ATENA_V4xx_Install.exe, which is located on your distribution medium. This can be either a CD or a compressed archive, if you downloaded the program from the Internet. The installation program will guide you through the installation process. The intallation sometimes needs to upgrade some of your system files. In this case you will be asked to restart your computer. For a silent intallation, i.e., no questions, default settings, you can run the installer with the /S switch. 2.1 ATENA Engineering 2D During the installation process you will be asked to select the required components. ATENA 2D is one of the available components. This program allows you to perform non-linear finite element simulation of concrete or reinforced concrete structures using two-dimensional finite element models. This program contains a graphical user interface for data-preparation, analysis control and monitoring and for the post-processing. 2.2 ATENA Engineering 3D ATENA 3D is a similar graphical environment as ATENA 2D, but it provides the same functionality for full three-dimensional analysis. This program allows you to perform non-linear finite element simulation of concrete or reinforced concrete structures using three-dimensional finite element models. This program contains a graphical user interface for data-preparation, analysis control and monitoring and for the post-processing. 2.3 AtenaConsole AtenaConsole is additional component, which allows you to execute ATENA finite element calculations in a batch mode environment. It can be used for two-dimensional as well as 3D analyses. 2.4 AtenaWin AtenaWin is additional component, which allows you to execute ATENA finite element calculations in a batch mode environment. It can be used for two-dimensional as well as 3D analyses. It differs from AtenaConsole by a simple graphical environment that allows users to visualize results and data from finite element calculations. It also contains mesh generation capabilities if a boundary representation of the model is provided. It is especially suitable for expert users that need to exploit the additional functionality of the FE solution core that is not supported by the ATENA 2D and 3D graphical environment. 2.5 FEMAP Interface If this component is selected, interface modules for data exchange between ATENA and FEMAP will be installed on your computer. The data exchange interface is a set of Easy Basic scripts, which can be executed from FEMAP by selecting the menu File|Program|Run Script. The Easy Basic scripting is available only in FEMAP version 7 and older. ATENA-FEMAP interface is not available for FEMAP version 8. For faster access it is possible to execute the scripts directly from the FEMAP menu. For this you will need a file which is located in ATENA directory FEMAP, and is named menu.esp. In this file you should replace the string %ATENA_SCRIPTS_DIR% with an appropriate path to the directory where ATENA-FEMAP scripts are located. These scripts can be found in Atena directory in subdirectory FEMAP\Scripts. Then copy the file menu.esp into the FEMAP directory. On Windows 95 and 98 operating system it is necessary to define the following environmental variable set AtenaConsole="C:\Program Files\CervenkaConsulting\Atena v3\AtenaConsole.exe" set AtenaWin="C:\Program Files\CervenkaConsulting\Atena v3\AtenaWin.exe" where the path should be correctly to the directory, where the program AtenaConsole and AtenaWin programs are located. On Windows NT this variable is created automatically during the program installation. In order to be able to define material properties for ATENA directly in FEMAP, a file matl_def.esp should be copied into the FEMAP directory. This file is located in Atena directory in the subdirectory FEMAP\Materials. This file can be copied into the FEMAP directory, however since it may overwrite some of your material custom definitions, it might be better just to add its content to the file with the same name in your FEMAP directory. 2.6 ATENA Science ATENA-GiD Interface If this component is selected, interface modules for data exchange between ATENA and GiD will be installed on your computer. GiD can be used as a 3D and 2D pre- and post-processor for ATENA. Currently, the postprocessing is limited in some respects in GiD. The post-processing can also be done in AtenaWin or Atena3DPost. Only the demo version of GiD is currently distributed with the ATENA software. The demo version is limited to 1000 elements. GiD can be used to prepare numerical models for very complex structures. It also supports imports from various modelling standards. The full licence of GiD can be obtained from ATENA distributors. More information about GiD can be obtained at the internet address: http://www.gidhome.com/ During the installation you will be prompted if you want to install demo version of GiD and ATENA-GiD interface. If you want to use ATENA along with GiD please select the appropriate boxes. In order to execute ATENA directly from GiD on Windows 95 and 98 operating system it is necessary to define the following environmental variable set AtenaWin="C:\Program Files\CervenkaConsulting\AtenaV4\AtenaWin.exe" set Atena3DPost="C:\Program Files\CervenkaConsulting\AtenaV4\Atena3D_1_EN.exe" where the path should be correctly to the directory, where the programs are located. On Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 this variable is created automatically during the program installation. The distributed ATENA-GiD interface supports GiD version 7.7.2b and later, for details, see viz GiD\Problemtypes\AtenaV4\Readme.txt 2.7 Installation of NetHasp network hardlock. This section describes how to install the network hardlock for program ATENA. If you had requested a network version of ATENA, you received a red NetHasp hardlock. This hardlock can be plugged into the parallel port of an arbitraty computer in your local area network (LAN). The program ATENA can then be installed on any computer connected to this network and running Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 system (32 or 64 bit). The good practice is to place the content of the installation CD on the server, so that everybody can install it on his or her computer. When ATENA is executed on a client computer, it first checks if a valid Hasp hardlock is connected to the computer. If it cannot find a hardlock on the local computer it searches the network for a NetHasp hardlock. After the NetHasp is located, the program attempts to log into the NetHasp hardlock. If there are more workstations currently using ATENA then is the allowed limit, the login is refused and ATENA cannot be used. In order to use the network hardlock, the red NetHasp hardlock key must be connected to at least one computer in the LAN, and the NetHasp License Manager must be running on this computer. The NetHasp License Manager for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 is located in the directory \Common Files\Fine Shared\System and is called lmsetup.exe. It can be executed directly from there to install the license manager or after the installation of ATENA it is also available from the Task bar menu: Start | Programs | Cervenka Consulting. It is important to realize that the computer with the network hardlock and NetHasp license manager must be running, in order for the client computers to be able to access it and log into the NetHasp. Some problems may occur, if for some reason an ATENA sesion on a client computer fails to end correctly, due to a computer or program crash. In this case, the program did not log out of the NetHasp License Manager, and one license can be blocked for others to use. There are two solutions to this problem. Either ATENA can be started again and the blocked license will be freed after the program is correctly terminated. Or NetHasp License Manager can be stopped and restared again. This will reset the number of available licenses back to the original number. This should be done, however, only at times when there are no clients using ATENA. It is important to note that if ATENA is executed several times on a single computer, this scenario will consume only one license in the NetHasp License Manager. 3. DOCUMENTATION The installation contains the following documentation in electronic format. In order to view the documentation PDF reader must be installed on your computer. Such a reader can be for instance obtained free of charge at the internet address http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. [1] Theory Manual for ATENA. ATENA 3D is executed from Start|Programs menu on your desktop. AtenaConsole is executed either directly from GiD or FEMAP or from a command line by typing: %AtenaConsole% [OPTIONS] input_file output_file message_file error_file FEMAP-ATENA interface is started either from FEMAP toolbox menu or directly from FEMAP Menu item Atena. AtenaWin is executed either directly from Start menu or from a command line by typing: %AtenaWin% [OPTIONS] input_file output_file message_file error_file 5. KNOWN PROBLEMS Please report any problems by e-mail to cervenka@cervenka.cz. See also the Products » ATENA » Known problems on our Web, http://www.cervenka.cz/products/atena/known-problems - Atena 3D v4 sometimes can not be restored by clicking when minimized into the Windows taskbar. If this occurs, please open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+Esc) and restore the window using the "Switch to" command in the context menu brought by right-clicking Atena 3D in the applications list - When installing in Windows Vista, make sure to enable the "Run as administrator" option before starting the installation if you encounter problems during the installation or when starting the installed program. - In the case of geometry created in older ATENA versions, sometimes the mesh is not generated for a macroelement and an error is reported. In this case it is necessary to open the problematic macroelement for editing and close it again by clicking "OK" (i.e., recreating it is not required). - In Windows Vista, "Desktop Composition" has to be disabled if you notice display problems. Right click on the Atena3D and 2D items in the start menu, select Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Check the box "Disable desktop composition". In some cases, changing the display theme (Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Personalization - Theme) to "Windows Classic" can also help with display problems. - I get the warning "Convergence criteria (within line search) not satisfied due to eta limit, continuing superordinate iteration" during analysis, what does it mean? It is a warning about the line search iterations. Line search method is explained in the Theory manual in chapter 4.5 page 180. This method only helps to stabilize the convergence process. Normally, the solution parameters are defined such that only 1-2 line search iterations are performed in each step. Thus, it is quite normal that it is not enough for this method to fully converge, but it is not a problem and the main important thing is that at the end each analysis step converges. This you can for instance check in the menu Data | Analysis progress information in ATENA 3D. - In 2D runtime, the display selection box sometimes lists stresses and strains in X direction only. If you encouter this problem, change the materials' order such that the first one is not a reinforcement material. - the return algorithm of the plasticity model has changed in version 3.3.0 (06/09/14). The BETA parameter of the NonLinCementitious2 model now has a different impact on the final results. Specifically, if a standard Poisson's ratio of 0.2 is used, the BETA parameter of the new solver is equal to half of the BETA parameter of the old solver. Hence, all old models with nonzero BETA should be updated. - some very old parallel hardlocks (pre-2000, originally supplied with SBETA) do not work properly. If you experience crashes while generating the FE mesh or starting the analysis, ask for a new HW key, you can choose parallel or USB. - some GiD examples need to be transformed to the new version. If you get an Error in line 2 at xxxxxx\xxx.uni: system ATENA is not defined when opening a project, go to Data-Problem Type-AtenaV4 and select again the checked type, e.g. Transport. Then choose "Transform to new problemtype" (Transform, NOT Update - the latter would destroy boundary conditions). After that the project should work normally. - Some nVidia graphics cards (gaming/office) do not work correctly (errors e.g. in rendering the colour scale). For correct display, keep/return to the 7.x.x.x drivers or decrease the HW acceleration to max. the 2nd position "Disable all but basic accelerations" with drivers 8.x.x.x, 9.x.x.x, and 1xx.xx, including 182.50 (6.14.11.8250). Graphics cards designed for CAD, e.g., nVidia FX series or ATI FireGL series, are recommended for ATENA. - CC3DNonLinCementitous3User material is sligthly modified starting from version 3.2.5. The unloading in tension is elastic up to the onset of localization. After the localization onset the unloading is to the point where the localization started. - CC3DCementitious material and CC3DNonLinCementitious material may show stronger behavior in version 2.0.1 than in previous versions. The failure envelope has been modified to better represent the tri-axial compressive behavior or concrete. This difference should be significant only in stress states with high confinement. In previous version of ATENA this tri-axial strength was highly underestimated. - It is not possible to read results created with version 1.2.3 and earlier of the program. Only input data are backward compatible, so it is necessary to re-calculate old data when new version of the program is installed. - Some materials do not support Tangent predictor. Elastic stiffness is used instead. The following materials do not support tangent stiffness: CC3DBiLinearSteelVonMises, CC3DDruckerPragerPlasticity. Tangent stiffness is supported partially in CC3DCementitious, CC3DNonLinCementitious materials. - Reactions are always correctly calculated but they can be wrongly reported in the post-processor in case of: - inclined supports - only one component of the reaction is shown. - for supports close to the reinforcement - part of the reaction that goes into the reinforcement rod is not shown, but it will appear in the textual output in the node that belongs to the reinforcement and is close to the support condition. - reaction at a joint which connects too regions will contain the reaction force only from one region and not the other. This may be especially a problem in case of load-displacement diagram monitoring. It is recommended not to monitor reaction or forces at geometrical joints that belong to more than one region. If it is neccessary then the reaction force should be monitored at all nodes with identical coordinates. The total reaction can be then obtained by their summation. Correct reaction forces can be verified from the text output of the INTERNAL_FORCES. (Fixed in 1.1.3) - Sometimes after lot of editing and changes program start to report various error messages. This means that due to some yet unresolved bugs the program database is not consistent. This problem can be resolved by saving the data, closing the program, starting Atena it and opening the data again. In most cases no data are lost. 6.
